Lexington to Montreal

Drove today to Minuteman National Park and North Bridge where the first shot was fired that started the American Revolution. Its a lovely place to stroll through history with guides situated to answer questions.

ORCHARD HOUSE

Not to be missed is ORCHARD HOUSE….The home of Louisa May Alcott. The tour of her home, where all her books were written on a small desk in her bedroom, is without a doubt worth it. It matters not if you have read Little Women..its still interesting. Ohhh…but if you love these books as I do, Orchard house is the holy grail.

MONTREAL AND NEWPORT VT

We drove north to Montreal and enjoyed our time visiting with family and friends. Brians folks live in Brossard and had a good visit with them on the south shore of Montreal.

We drove Brians mom to the family summer camp on Lake Memphremagog Vermont. My first time here I was just 16..then all through my twenties it became my second home.. then our children played each summer as they grew. This place is in our collective family DNA. Its been years since I have been here but nothing has changed on these knotty pine walls. So many wonderful memories here. I still struggle to make a “one match fire” in the Vermont Castings stove, though!

Irene and I at Derby Line Village Inn for dinner. Austrian owners have created a warm and inviting restaurant with great food.

MONTREAL

We also Ubered into our beautiful hometown city to meet up with our high school gang in a restaurant Les Enfants Terribles…a name fitting to our earlier selves…on Sherbrooke St. The gales of laughter brought back great memories…nothing but our haircolor has really changed that much..Like yesterday with these fun fools!

BURLINGTON VERMONT

September 10 we left Montreal and drove through Burlington Vermont. We stopped at Shelburne Farms, a beautiful sustainable farming and education center on acreage donated years ago to Vermont. From 1886 to 1902, William Seward and Lila Vanderbilt Webb consolidated 32 farms into a 3,800-acre agricultural estate. Its landscape design was inspired by Central Park landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The Webbs’ grand model horse farm began a tradition of agricultural innovation.

headed to scenic Route 100. I used a fabulous app called Gypsy guide rt 100

It uses gps to gently help you find ‘off the beaten path’places you just might overlook with a written guide. All the gypsy App guides are great!

WARREN, VERMONT

The Leaves are just hinting at Autumn color but the cooling days and chilly nights tell us its about to explode. Our first night is at

The Pitcher Inn

In Warren Vermont

A Relais and Chateaux boutique Inn with superb staff and clever rooms with unique style.

Cannot say enough about the Relais experience. Try it!

Phoenix, Boston and Lexington

Don’t get me wrong..I’m not suggesting that if Meg, Ben and Riley lived a bit closer it would not be fantastic. What I am about to say is .. where they do live is extraordinary and an obviously perfect place to raise a family!Their lovely new home is beyond words and the new neighbourhood with young families so nice. Day one we went toThe MIM which is a world class 200,000 square foot musical odyssey! From Johnny Cash to Albanian folk music… everyone who loves music needs to make a pilgrimage to this museum. Brian got to salivate over an entire wall describing how his beloved Martin Guitar was handmade. Riley got to play all sorts of fun instruments.

Day two we visited The Aquarium. Riley has been a few times in stroller with her folks but Meg said this was first time she was so excited and engaged with the exhibits! Firsts are the bests!

Ben went to Sedona on a short hike with a friend in preparation for a BIG hike in Washington State later in month!

Enjoying the beautiful new home and brand new “backyard splash pad”.. think Bellagio fountains.. residential size!

Sad to leave but off to next next stop …

BOSTON!

Stayed at The Fairmont Copley Plaza

which was truly beautiful. Middle of city and short walk to Boston Common and Boston Common

The Granary Burial grounds contain all sorts of patriots. Ben Franklins parents, Paul Revere and even Mother Goose!

and Freedom Trail. Walked all over city. Perfect late summer weather contributed to a lovely day. We have avoided lobster rolls .. so far.

A Short drive northwest of Boston is Lexington.. birthplace of the American Revolution. Staying tonight and tomorrow at a picture perfect New England Landmark in Lexington..The Inn at Hastings Park.

Looking forward to our day tomorrow at Minute Man National Park.

I have even discovered my 6th great Grandfather and grandmother (b. 1680 and 1682 respectively) were born and married here in Concord. Must assume their offspring decided to be United Loyalists and bolt north to Canada instead of fighting for independence from the crown! Oh well! I’m a proud American now with firmly planted Canadian roots.
